DIY SKINNY TEA

You have probably seen the HYPE all over Instagram, Youtube and Twitter about the SKINNY TEA product that so many women are getting their hands on. I know I have and I was very interested in what makes this tea SKINNY

So I browsed the site and checked out the ingredients list to see what was in the tea. To my surprise it was all basic stuff anyone could get their hands on! So I decided, why would I pay a premium price for stuff I can get at my local markets that is pre mixed together with some cute packaging?!

In my house alone, I already owned a good portion of the ingredients.
The Skinny Tea brand contains:

  • Ashwaganda Root
  • Celery Leaf
  • Goji Berries
  • Jasmine tea
  • Lemon grass
  • Nettle leaf
  • Sencha green tea
  • Senna leaf
  • Yerba Mate
Most of these ingredients are fairly easy to get your hands on seperatly at your local grocery store, drug store, health food store and even your local Asian food market.
However you may not want to buy every one of these ingredients. So I decided to make my own basic and simple skinny tea!
For this simple version of skinny tea you will need:
  • Matcha green tea
  • Peppermint tea
  • Senna tea
  • Celery leafs *optional*
  • Jasmine tea *optional*
Matcha Green Tea is a form of Japanese green tea that is great for boosting your immune system and is full of powerful antioxidants. Matcha green tea is a step of from Sencha tea. However Matcha can be quite expensive depending of the form you get, being most expensive if you buy the full powder form. Try visiting your local Asian food market to get the best prices on Matcha green tea and if possible, try to find the form that is half powder and half loose leaf. This form is less expensive and still has the same benefits since you still have the powder form in it. Why is the powder form so expensive? Because it is a fine miller powder, you ingest almost all the powder while you drink your tea, meaning you ingest the full leafs providing your body with all the benefits of the tea! Making it the best of course!
Peppermint Tea is a great alternative for Ashwaganda root. Peppermint tea aid in digestion helping your body to pass food and gasses more easily through the body. Along with digestion, it also has a calming effect to the body helping to calm nerves and muscles to help you relax, relieve nausea and even reduce cold and flu symptoms. It also benefits those with irritable bowel syndrome by calming the stomach and intestine muscles! It boosts the immune system, reduces bad breath, and some even claim that is suppresses appetite which helps promote weight loss!
Senna Tea is a natural herbal laxative that can be found in your local grocery stores and Asian market. This form of laxative is the most natural way to keep your system moving especially if you are easily constipated or have IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). Because it regulates bowel movements, Senna tea is a great way to promote weight loss by keeping your system moving. HOWEVER! Senna is indeed a laxative and should not be taken in large amounts ever. This of it as a double edge sword. It is beneficial but can also be harmful to you. Make sure you only add a small amount of Senna into your Skinny Tea. My Skinny Tea recipe should not be drunk more then once every other day. If you would like to drink Skinny Tea daily, dilute the senna with more other the other ingredients listed.
Celery Leafs If you can’t get your hands on celery leafs, try using celery seeds, however either one of these can be found at your local grocery store in the spices section. Celery leaf is great for reducing your sweet tooth! If you crave sweets on the daily then this is a great ingredient to add to your Skinny Tea! If you don’t crave sweets then this ingredient is optional. However celery leaf does boost the immune system and help promote strong kidneys and reduce the chance of kidney stones by helping remove toxins from the body. Even if you don’t have a sweet tooth, you should consider adding this.
Jasmine tea is great for boosting the metabolism and has antioxidants just like green tea! Add this to your tea to add a lovely floral flavour as well! I personally LOVE Jasmine tea.
These are all the basic ingredients you need to have an effective Skinny Tea! Some of the ingredients from the original Skinny Tea are not necessary if you eat healthy and take vitamins daily.
Lets start making the tea!

Start by collecting your desired ingredients for your Skinny Tea. For my second batch of Skinny Tea, I only wanted a basic version so I only added 3 ingredients.
First I chose Peppermint tea.

Next I used Senna tea.

For the final ingredient I chose my Matcha Green tea. You can use any green tea but any Japanese green tea is preferred for its benefits.
Next, rip open tea tea bag and combine it into a glass or mixing bowl. I added 4 table spoons of matcha green tea. For this demonstration I only made a small batch of Skinny Tea.
For the mixture you always want the senna to be the least amount added since it is a laxative.
Make sure your store your Skinny Tea properly keeping it out of humidity and not exposed to air. Keep it in a container, plastic bag or even old tea tins!
Once your ready, make yourself a glass of Skinny Tea! Make sure you own a tea diffuser! These are easy to find at local grocery stores and Asian markets! Here I have a fancy one from Teaopia that is very old so I have no idea if they sell the same one still but they do sell good tea diffusers! Any specialty tea shop will ๐Ÿ™‚

Once your tea has steeped, pour yourself a cup and enjoy!
If you aren’t a tea drinker, you will not enjoy the flavour of this tea. Green tea is the main player here as well as Peppermint and you may find this tea bitter. Adding Jasmine tea will help with the flavour and make it more floral, however it will still be bitter. If you can’t handle the flavour, add skim milk and honey. This is a tea for weight loss and weight management, you don’t want to ruin its effects by adding cream, whole milk or sugar. Train yourself to enjoy tea by only adding skim milk and honey. Slowly reduce the amount of milk and honey each time you have skinny tea until you are able to enjoy the tea on its own.

REMEMBER, this tea should only be enjoyed every other day. If you want to drink if every day. Add more of every other ingredient and still only use 1 tea bag of senna. Meaning double or triple the amount of every except for senna. This means you will be ingesting much less senna, reducing its effects so you can enjoy it 1 cup daily. For this recipe, it is portioned out for 1 cup every other day. Make sure you drink lots of water while you are taking Skinny Tea. Senna can dehydrate you because it is a laxative. Even so, its important to always drink lots of water even if your not taking Skinny Tea!

I hope you enjoyed this DIY tutorial! Good luck in creating your own perfect skinny tea!
